Last month, I saw a news report on CTV's "First Story" about Aboriginal artist Louie Gong, who creates First Nations art on Vans shoes. Although he mainly draws Aboriginal symbols, he will draw other objects if the customer wishes. Only armed with a sharpie felt and a pencil, he draws extremely elaborate designs that appear to have come straight from the manufacturer. Some of his designs include the raven and the hummingbird. He also designs skateboards and t-shirts. As I was watching the news program, I wondered if people would consider his work art, or if it is something entirely different. Hey, I remember you talking about those during break! They look pretty awesome, and although I don't think those are the guy brand, I would totally pick up a pair. I think his work should not be discounted as art purely due to the fact he is chasing profit, nor because he is basing his designs on top of pre-existing elements, such as skateboards and shoes. He's just taking art to the next level, and making money while doing it! Most artists cannot claim either, I'd bet.
