performance in media

Some of you may have heard the headlines about Canadian figure skater Joannie Rochette's mother dying at VGH this weekend. This has been all over the media which to me brings up an interesting debate on the ethics of media. The media is taking a respectful stance on the story but they are still broadcasting this. Is it ethical to broadcast this kind of information? It happens all the time, peoples personal lives and relationships all over the news.

It would seem to me if I was in the situation i would feel exploited. This brings up the question of ethics in media. In the case of this they made Joannie into a hero which was at least a positive portrayal but the question remains is it ethical.

  1. I tend to agree with your sentiments here, Megan. It's also interesting to read the reporting on Rochette's mother's death in relation to the death of the Georgian luger the afternoon of the opening of the Games--an event it seems that most people want to go away.
